The Egyptian and his land are difficult to separate. All earth products, like mud and clay, were elements to survival, and of expression. Plates, drinking containers, cooking utensils, and colorful decorative ornaments are all made out of burnt clay. Egyptian pieces from prehistoric eras, pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic periods fill museums all over the world. Twentieth century works by artists of today fill galleries of Cairo and Alexandria.
